I'm a second-generation florist, science journalist and wildlife carer.
My childhood was spent selling flowers from a horse and cart in South Yarra. In my teens I worked with my mum doing the flowers for hotels. In my twenties, I studied botany and zoology, and later, science journalism, while working in the family's Prahran shop, The Big Bunch. After the business's sale in 2006, I started in the world of event floristry, establishing a studio in the Dandenong Ranges.
Over the next 14 years the team expanded, and we brought the magic of local, seasonal flowers to over 800 events, most in partnership with iconic venues, Stones of the Yarra Valley and Zonzo in Yarra Glen.
But then in 2016, I saw a load of plastic floral foam dumped in an onsite compost bin. So in 2017, I started the #nofloralfoam movement on Instagram to promote foam-free design. This movement went global, with "foam-free" becoming the new standard for floral designers around the world. In 2018 I expanded on the concept and created, the Sustainable Floristry Network. Today, the SFN is leading the global industry to a new standard of design and business through CPD certified sustainability education for florists.
These days I'm mostly stuck at a computer and I miss working with flowers like crazy. So each year I do a handful of events for the love of it. I love flowers, the community of people who grow and sell them, and making flower magic. Please reach out if you have something extra special, that needs extra special flowers.
